French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned a knife attack that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to three others in eastern France on Saturday, calling it an act of Islamist terrorism.
This announcement followed confirmation from the French anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office that the case is under investigation.
According to a statement from the prosecutor’s office, the incident occurred in the city of Mulhouse, where a man attacked local police officers while shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) on Saturday afternoon. A passer-by was killed while attempting to intervene, and three police officers were injured in the attack.
“It is without any doubt an act of Islamist terrorism,” Macron declared to reporters on the sidelines of the annual French farm show. He also mentioned that the interior minister was on his way to Mulhouse.
The prosecutor’s office has confirmed that the suspect has been arrested.
