Former Super Eagles captain, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, has responded sharply to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher’s controversial remarks about the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Carragher, during an appearance on Sky Sports, suggested that even if Mohamed Salah won the AFCON, it would not significantly boost his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or. He later elaborated on social media, stating: “Salah is at a disadvantage playing for Egypt in terms of him winning the Ballon d’Or. If Salah had an average season at Liverpool but won the AFCON and was [Player of the Tournament], I don’t think he’d win the Ballon d’Or, because I don’t think the AFCON carries the weight of other tournaments.”
The comments sparked backlash from fans and several African football legends. Okocha, in his response, took a swipe at Carragher, suggesting that his remarks were not worth taking seriously.
“There are some players whose comments you just have to overlook,” Okocha remarked. “When you consider their careers and the type of football they played, then you’ll understand.”
Okocha’s criticism comes amidst ongoing debates about the perceived lack of recognition and respect for African football on the global stage.
