Former British Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch has been elected as the new leader of the Conservative Party, following her victory over Robert Jenrick in the final round of voting.
Badenoch, who was raised in Nigeria, has made history as the first black woman to lead a major political party in the United Kingdom. The 44-year old North West Essex MP succeeds Rishi Sunak as leader of the opposition, having secured 53,806 votes compared to Jenrick’s 41,388.
The party announced the result this morning. During her campaign, Badenoch pledged to return the Conservatives to “first principles” and promised to launch a series of reviews in the coming months to shape a new policy platform.
