Three Dead After Attempted English Channel Crossing

Date:

Three people have died while attempting to cross the English Channel in a small boat on Sunday morning, according to the French coastguard.

The incident occurred off the coast of Sangatte, near Calais, around 06:00 local time (05:00 GMT).

Passengers ended up in the water after trying to board a boat. The three deceased individuals were later recovered from the water by helicopter. Additionally, 45 others received treatment on the beach, many suffering from hypothermia, and four were taken to the hospital.

This year has been the deadliest on record for Channel crossings.

Dame Angela Eagle, Minister for Border Security and Asylum, stated that lives had been lost because “ruthless criminals running the small boat trade are overloading people into unseaworthy vessels.” She emphasized the government’s commitment to dismantling these gangs and supporting the French authorities.

Mayor of Sangatte, Guy Allemand, told AFP, “It never stops. It’s crossing after crossing, without any let-up.” He added that seven people required intensive care following the incident.

The French coastguard confirmed that a search was ongoing at sea for any additional survivors.

The Home Office acknowledged the incident occurred in French waters, with French authorities leading the response and investigation.
