Syria’s New Elections Could Take Up to Four Years, Says Rebel Leader

Date:

Rebel leader Ahmed al-Sharaa has stated in a broadcast interview that holding new elections in Syria could take up to four years.

This marks the first time he has provided a timeline for potential elections since his group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led a rebel offensive that ousted former President Bashar al-Assad.

In an interview with Saudi state broadcaster Al Arabiya on Sunday, al-Sharaa mentioned that drafting a new constitution could take up to three years.

He also noted that it might be a year before Syrians begin to see significant changes and improvements in public services following the overthrow of the Assad regime.

Al-Sharaa emphasized that Syria needs to rebuild its legal system and conduct a comprehensive population census to ensure legitimate elections.
