Baroness Michelle Mone has hit back at Rishi Sunak, saying she was “honest”

Date:

In the heart of Westminster, a storm brews as Baroness Michelle Mone stands firm against the swirling winds of controversy. The saga, thick with intrigue and accusations, sees the Baroness vehemently defending her honor amidst a maelstrom of media scrutiny and political uproar.

At the eye of the storm is the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the darkest days of the Covid pandemic—a time when urgency clashed with procedure, and the need for speed met the demand for transparency. The Baroness admits to misleading the press but maintains that her dealings with the government were as clear as crystal.

Responding to Mr Sunak’s comments on X, Baroness Mone said: “What is @RishiSunak talking about?

“I was honest with the Cabinet Office, the government and the NHS in my dealings with them.

“They all knew about my involvement from the very beginning.”

Lord Bethell – who was a minister in the Department of Health during the covid pandemic – disputed her account, saying she “wasn’t ‘honest’ about her financial interest to me”.

“She didn’t explain ‘from the very beginning’ about her financial ‘involvement’,” he wrote on X, adding that Mr Sunak was right to take the matter seriously.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, with the weight of his office, asserts the gravity of the situation, promising legal action and hinting at the shadows of an ongoing criminal investigation. The plot thickens as Lord Bethell, a key player from the Department of Health, casts doubt on the Baroness’s narrative, suggesting a less than candid disclosure of financial interests.

Labour’s Sir Keir Starmer, armed with righteous indignation, calls for the Baroness’s removal from the House of Lords, labeling the scandal a “shocking disgrace, from top to the bottom.” The Liberal Democrats, not to be outdone, demand an independent inquiry, seeking to unravel the tangled web woven within the Cabinet Office. “The more this scandal unfolds the more serious the questions for Michael Gove and other ministers to answer,” the party’s Cabinet Office spokeswoman Christine Jardine said.

Baroness Mone, once a luminary in the Conservative ranks, now finds herself on a leave of absence, her name entwined with PPE Medpro—a company under the piercing gaze of the National Crime Agency. Energy Efficiency Minister Lord Callanan voices a hope that resonates with the public sentiment: that the Baroness will “see sense” and step away from the hallowed halls of the Lords.
