Rebecca Welch: The trailblazing referee who is breaking barriers in the Premier League

Date:

Rebecca Welch steps onto the pitch at Craven Cottage this afternoon, she will make history as the first woman to referee a Premier League match. The 40-year-old from Washington, Tyne and Wear, has been blazing a trail in the world of football officiating, breaking down stereotypes and inspiring others to follow her footsteps.

Rebecca Welch started her refereeing career in 2010, balancing it with her job in the NHS. She quickly rose through the ranks, officiating in the Women’s Super League, the Women’s FA Cup final, the FA Women’s Community Shield, and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She also became the first woman to referee a men’s FA Cup third-round tie and a Championship game.

Welch is part of a development group of officials fast-tracked by the refereeing body, PGMOL, to improve the quality and diversity of refereeing in the top four divisions in England. She has been praised for her calmness, authority, and accuracy on the field, earning respect from players, managers, and fans alike.

Welch is not the only history-maker in the Premier League this week. Sam Allison will also become the first black referee to officiate in the top flight for 15 years when he takes charge of Sheffield United v Luton on Boxing Day. Allison and Welch are role models for aspiring referees from under-represented communities, showing that talent and hard work can overcome any barriers.

Rebecca Welch is aware of the significance of her appointment, but she is also focused on doing her job well. She said:

“I’m really excited and proud to be given this opportunity. It’s a huge honour and a privilege to be part of the Premier League. I’ve worked hard to get to this level and I’m looking forward to the challenge. I hope I can inspire more women and girls to get involved in refereeing and show them that anything is possible.
