The Nigerian entertainment industry is mourning the loss of one of its most celebrated and influential figures, Jimi Solanke, who died on Monday, February 5, 2024, at the age of 81.
Solanke, who was a folklore musician, film actor, dramatist, poet, and playwright, was renowned for his mastery of storytelling as a cultural custodian who skillfully preserved and promoted the rich heritage of Africa, especially the Yoruba people.
Jimi was born on July 4, 1942, in Ipara Remo, Ogun State, and began his artistic journey as a member of the Orisun Theatre Group, founded by Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, in 1961. Later moved to the United States, where he created a drama group called The Africa Review, focusing on African culture and performing in black African schools.
He returned to Nigeria in 1986 and worked with the Nigerian Television Authority, where he became a household name with his popular show, Storyland, which featured him narrating folk tales to children and adults alike. Also starred in several movies, such as Kongi’s Harvest, Sango, and Shadow Parties, among others.
Also he was widely respected and honored for his contributions to the global entertainment industry, spanning seven decades. Jimi received several awards and recognitions, such as the National Merit Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the African Movie Academy Awards, and the Order of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He is survived by his wife and seven children, who are also involved in various aspects of the arts. He will be greatly missed by his fans, colleagues, and admirers, who have expressed their condolences and tributes on social media and other platforms.
Jimi Solanke was reported to have died while being transported from his rural home in Ipara Remo to Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Ilisan, after a brief battle with an illness. His burial arrangements will be announced by his family in due course.
