Bernard Sang of Kenya has made history by winning the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon 2024, the ninth edition of the prestigious race. He crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 16 minutes and 49 seconds, beating about 80 other elite marathoners from around the world.
Sang, who also participated in 2023 and finished in third place, improved his performance and claimed the grand prize of $50,000. He was followed by his compatriots Simon Cheprot and Edwin Kiptoo, who finished second and third, respectively, and took home $40,000 and $30,000.
The 42-kilometer race started at the National Stadium in Surulere and ended at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island. The winners of both the men’s and women’s races qualified for the marathon event at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
In the women’s category, Kebene Chala of Ethiopia emerged as the first woman to get to the finish line. She also won $50,000 for her impressive performance3.
