Arsenal demolish Newcastle 4-1 to keep pace in premier league title race

Date:

Arsenal continued their scintillating form in the Premier League as they thrashed Newcastle United 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The Gunners scored four goals for the fourth consecutive league game, extending their winning streak to six matches since the start of the year.

The hosts took the lead in the 18th minute when Sven Botman turned a cross from Kai Havertz into his own net. Havertz doubled the advantage in the 34th minute with a clinical finish from a Bukayo Saka pass. Saka then made it 3-0 in the 51st minute with a superb solo effort, dribbling past three defenders and slotting the ball past the keeper. Jakub Kiwior added the fourth in the 68th minute with a powerful header from a corner.

Newcastle got a consolation goal in the 88th minute when former Gunner Joe Willock scored against his old club with a low shot from the edge of the box. But it was too little, too late for the visitors, who remain in the relegation zone with 18 points from 26 games.

Arsenal, meanwhile, climbed to the third spot with 54 points, four behind leaders Manchester City, who have a game in hand. Mikel Arteta’s men have been unstoppable in 2024, scoring 24 goals and conceding only three in their six league wins. They have also progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and the last 16 of the Europa League, making them one of the most in-form teams in Europe.

The Gunners will look to maintain their momentum when they face Porto in the first leg of their Europa League tie on Thursday, before hosting Burnley in the league on Sunday. Newcastle, on the other hand, will hope to bounce back when they welcome Southampton to St James’ Park on Saturday.
