Biafra: Kanu back in court as terrorism trial resumes, new lawyers join case

Date:

The terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has continued at the Federal High Court Abuja, presided by Justice Binta Nyako.

Effects Online reports that both sides have changed their legal teams, as Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN now heads the prosecution, while Alloy Ejimakor leads the defence. The Federal Government had slammed an amended 15-count charge of terrorism and treasonable felony on Nnamdi Kanu in 2021 and he was brought to court in July of the same year after his abduction from Kenya.

Justice Nyako had thrown out eight of the 15 counts after ruling on the preliminary objection filed by Defence counsel questioning the validity of the charges. Kanu had appealed the decision of the trial court to sustain seven of the 15 counts, where his preliminary objection had demanded the total dismissal of the whole charges.

The Court of Appeal had cleared Kanu of the charges on grounds that the Federal Government violated his rights by his extraordinary rendition to Nigeria.

But the Supreme Court reversed the judgement of the Court of Appeal, stating that the actions of the Federal Government did not nullify the charges or the trial.

Kanu was therefore ordered to return to the Federal High Court to face his trial where Justice Nyako had earlier halted proceedings.
