Arsenal demolish Sheffield United with six-goal thrashing

Date:

Arsenal showed no mercy as they hammered six goals past a hapless Sheffield United side at Bramall Lane.

The Gunners were unstoppable as they scored three goals in the first 13 minutes and five in the first half against the league’s whipping boys.

Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Ben White were on target – along with an own goal from Jayden Bogle – for Mikel Arteta’s team.

The win puts Arsenal within touching distance of leaders Liverpool, just two points behind.

It keeps the Gunners firmly in the hunt for the title, while Sheffield United are staring at the abyss, 11 points adrift of safety with only 11 games left.

Arsenal wasted no time in breaking the deadlock, with Odegaard slotting home from close range after a brilliant move down the left.

The lead was doubled in the 13th minute – Saka’s low cross was turned into his own net by Bogle, who made a mess of his clearance – and was soon increased when Martinelli pounced on a deflection after Kiwior’s cut back.

The home fans had seen enough and headed for the exits as Havertz made it 4-0 with a cool finish after a Martinelli through ball.

Arsenal toyed with United and added a fifth on 39 minutes, with Rice firing low past the helpless Grbic after a slick passing move.

The visitors did not let up after the break, as White blasted a left-footed shot past Grbic after another well-crafted move.

Arsenal made history by becoming the first English league side to win three consecutive away games by five or more goals, while United sank to a new low by becoming the first English league side to lose four consecutive home games in all competitions while shipping five or more goals.
