Ukrainian Weightlifting Champion Oleksandr Pielieshenko Dies in Conflict with Russia

Oleksandr Pielieshenko, a prominent Ukrainian weightlifter, met an untimely demise during the ongoing conflict with Russia. The 30-year-old athlete, who had previously represented Ukraine at the Rio 2016 Olympics, tragically lost his life on the front lines. Pielieshenko was a two-time European champion, showcasing his strength and skill in weightlifting competitions. His commitment to his country led him to join the armed forces shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Despite the dangers, he bravely fought for his homeland.

Pielieshenko’s achievements were remarkable. He secured a fourth-place ranking in the 85kg category at the Rio Games and clinched gold medals at the European championships in 2016 and 2017. However, his career faced a setback when he tested positive for banned substances in 2018, resulting in a suspension. Nevertheless, his dedication to weightlifting and his country remained unwavering.

The Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation expressed their sorrow, stating, “It is with great sadness that we inform you that the heart of merited master of sports of Ukraine… Oleksandr Pielieshenko has stopped beating today.”

They extended their sincere condolences to his family and everyone who knew him. Pielieshenko’s legacy as a champion and a hero will forever be remembered in the sporting world.
