Concluding their three-day private visit to Nigeria on Sunday, Dr. Uzochukwu Stanley, CEO of ‘The Delborough Lagos’, along with other distinguished Nigerians, extended a warm welcome to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
A significant highlight of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s inaugural visit to Nigeria was the bestowal of the title ‘African Princess’ upon Meghan.
Dr. Stanley hosted the royal couple at the esteemed Delborough Hotel in Lagos, where a gathering of Nigeria’s elite had convened to greet them. Here, Meghan was conferred with royal titles by influential traditional rulers from both Eastern and Western Nigeria.
His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, granted the Duchess the chieftaincy title of “Ada Mazi,” translating to “the daughter of the Igbo ancestral palace.” Concurrently, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwoland in Western Nigeria, bestowed upon her the Yoruba name “Adetokunbo,” signifying “royalty from across the seas.”
The Duke and Duchess were greeted at the Delborough with vibrant cultural dance performances by various dance troupes, much to their admiration.
In response, the newly crowned Princess referred to Nigeria as “my country,” expressing that “being African American, part of it is not knowing so much about your lineage or background, where you come from specifically. And it was exciting … to discover more and understand what that really means.
“Thank you for welcoming me home.”
It’s worth noting that the royal couple’s invitation to the West African nation was extended by the country’s Chief of Defense Staff, Christopher Musa.
