Wale Ojo Criticizes Nigerians’ ‘Japa Mentality’, Labels it as Disconcerting

Date:

Acclaimed actor Wale Ojo has expressed his desire for Nigerians to abandon the trend of seeking opportunities abroad, a phenomenon commonly referred to as ‘japa’.

In a conversation with ThisDay, Ojo outlined his aspirations for Nigeria, emphasizing that his affection for his homeland remains undiminished despite his extensive time spent overseas.

“I harbor numerous ambitions. Over the years, it would have been quite simple for me to avoid returning to Nigeria altogether. I could have comfortably settled in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, or even Russia. I am confident that I would have thrived in those environments. However, my affection for Nigeria is unwavering, and I will always hold Nigeria dear, regardless of the circumstances,” he declared.

Ojo underscored his stance on the ‘japa’ trend in Nigeria, expressing his embarrassment over the prevailing mindset. He stressed that, in spite of Nigeria’s numerous challenges, he is committed to being part of the solution to ensure the realization of his vision for Nigeria.

“I envision a Nigeria where the desire to ‘japa’ is not the norm. I find the ‘japa’ mentality to be disconcerting. It’s unfortunate when professionals, such as doctors, believe they can only excel abroad. Yet, whenever I visit the United States or any other country, Nigerians are lauded for their resourcefulness,” the actor elucidated.

“Upon returning home, one is confronted with myriad issues. I aspire to contribute to the solution; I don’t want to merely discuss the problems. I have initiated several measures to facilitate the solution. If the government wishes to engage with the creative industry, they should consult with individuals like us who have a clear vision for the country; we are not mere followers.”
