Chad’s Prime Minister Steps Down Following Election Results

Date:

On Wednesday, Chadian Prime Minister Succes Masra tendered his resignation to Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, the newly appointed leader of the junta.

This development comes two weeks after Masra’s defeat in the presidential elections to the junta.

Masra confirmed this development through a post on his Facebook page, which was verified by his team and reported by AFP.

“I have just tendered my resignation along with that of the transitional government, which has become redundant following the conclusion of the presidential election,” stated Masra.

It’s worth recalling that the 40-year-old Deby was declared the transitional president in April 2021 by a junta of 15 generals. This followed the assassination of his father, the autocratic President Idriss Deby Itno, who was killed by rebels after a 30-year rule.

As per the final election results, Deby won the presidential election held on May 6 with 61 percent of the votes.

Masra, who was a staunch opponent of Deby before assuming the role of prime minister four months ago, secured 18.5 percent of the vote but disputed the results.
