Fenerbahçe is on the verge of appointing José Mourinho as their new head coach. The renowned Portuguese manager has reportedly agreed to a two-year contract with the Turkish club.
This agreement includes an option for an additional season, extending until June 2026. Mourinho, who has been out of work since being sacked by Serie A side Roma in January, is now set to lead Fenerbahçe.
Aziz Yildirim is a candidate for the Fenerbahce presidency, with elections imminent. If Yildirim is elected president, Mourinho will take charge of the team.
However, Yildirim has expressed his desire for Mourinho to be the Fenerbahce coach regardless of whether he wins the presidency or if the other candidate, Ali Koç, is elected. Thus, Mourinho’s return to the sidelines is nearing, which is great news for football.
Previous reports claimed Mourinho was a target Saudi Arabian club Al Qadsiah, but seemingly his next destination is Turkey.
News comes just a day after it was revealed the Portuguese will join TNT Sports for the coverage of the Champions League final on Saturday 1 June.
‘The Special One’ had expressed interest in returning to management and looks to have secured a job after five months out of the game.
He previously placed on record that he could see himself managing in Saudi Arabia in the future.
“I don’t know when, but I am pretty sure of it. No one knows the future, but I will definitely do this. Doors are always open for me in Saudi Arabia. I want to feel the development there.” he said
However, it seems the time has not come yet, and he is set to arrive in Turkey after Fener brutally finished second in the league despite amassing a mammoth 99 points, three points shy of their bitter rivals Galatasaray.
Mourinho will be tasked with bringing glory back to Istanbul, and his track record speaks for itself.
The verbal agreement is in place, and the contract is currently under review by Mourinho’s camp. The official announcement could happen as early as today
