Malang Sarr Joins RC Lens as Free Agent After Terminating Chelsea Contract

Date:

Malang Sarr, the French defender, is bidding farewell to Chelsea as he leaves the club on a free transfer. Having terminated his contract with the Blues, Sarr is set to join RC Lens in Ligue 1.

Sarr joined Chelsea in 2020 on a free transfer but made only 21 appearances for the club, with his last game back in May 2022.

With just one year left on his current Chelsea contract, Sarr has reached an agreement to move to Lens.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Sarr will sign a two-year deal with RC Lens after agreeing to personal terms. He is expected to undergo a medical before officially joining the club.

Sarr was close to joining Le Havre in January, but the move fell through during the final hours of the transfer window.

 Malang Sarr’s career journey:

OGC Nice (2016-2020):

Sarr began his professional career at OGC Nice in Ligue 1. He made his debut for the club during the 2016-2017 season.

Known for his versatility, Sarr primarily played as a center-back but could also operate as a left-back.

His performances at Nice caught the attention of several European clubs.

Chelsea FC (2020-2022):

In August 2020, Sarr joined Chelsea on a free transfer. However, he faced stiff competition in the central defense.

Despite limited game time, he gained experience training alongside top-quality defenders like Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma.

Sarr made sporadic appearances in cup competitions and European fixtures.

Loan Spells:

During the 2020-2021 season, Sarr was loaned out to FC Porto in Portugal. He featured in both domestic and UEFA Champions League matches.

His loan spell provided valuable exposure and allowed him to adapt to different playing styles.

RC Lens (2022-present):

Now, Sarr is set to join RC Lens in Ligue 1. The French club offers him an opportunity to play regularly and continue his development.

Sarr’s departure continues Chelsea’s summer overhaul. The club has already made several signings and departures, with Enzo Maresca taking charge of his first game as manager.

Stay tuned for official confirmation as Sarr’s transfer to RC Lens becomes imminent!
