Nigerian track and field athlete Favour Ofili, who was disqualified from the 100 meters race at the ongoing Olympics in Paris due to the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) failing to register her. Ofili expressed her frustration on social media, noting she had worked for four years to earn this opportunity.
The AFN claimed confusion, stating they had registered Ofili for the 100 meters, 200 meters, and the 4×100 meters relay. Minister of Sports Development John Enoh promised thorough sanctions once the origins of the registration error are discovered, emphasizing the need for accountability.
Despite Enoh’s efforts, Ofili missed the event, further tarnishing Nigeria’s image. However, she did not let this setback dampen her resolve, becoming the first Nigerian to qualify for the final of the women’s 200 meters at the Olympics in 28 years.
To restore dignity in Nigerian sports, those responsible for such blunders must be held accountable, ensuring athletes can compete without unnecessary hurdles.
