Senator John Enoh, Minister of Sports Development, has commended Esther Nworgu for winning Nigeria’s second medal, a silver in the women’s 41kg para-powerlifting category at the ongoing Paralympic Games in Paris. Nworgu set two new Paralympic records, lifting 118kg in her final attempt, just shy of the gold medal won by China’s Zhe Cui with a lift of 119kg.
Nworgu’s earlier attempts of 106kg and 112kg positioned her as a strong contender, but her record-breaking 118kg lift secured the silver medal. Senator Enoh praised Nworgu on social media, saying, “Congratulations, Esther Ogechi Nworgu, on your victory and securing Nigeria’s second medal… We are so proud of you, champ.”
Nworgu’s silver medal follows Eniola Bolaji’s historic bronze in Para badminton earlier in the week, making Nigeria’s showing at the Paralympics promising. The minister, who is in Paris supporting Team Nigeria, expressed pride in the athletes’ achievements and emphasized the importance of resilience and belief in their abilities.
The ministry will continue to support Team Nigeria, urging the athletes to strive for podium finishes. With more events to come, Team Nigeria’s medal count is expected to grow. Nworgu’s achievement has brought joy to Nigerians, and her determination and hard work have paid off. Her silver medal is a testament to the country’s growing presence in international sports competitions.
