NMA Appeals to Tinubu: Reverse Petrol Price Hike

Date:

The Lagos State Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a passionate appeal to President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the current economic policies and reduce the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol. Dr. Saheed Kehinde, Chairman of the Lagos NMA, strongly condemned the recent price increase, citing the unbearable hardship it has imposed on Nigerians, including medical professionals.

Kehinde emphasized that the price hike comes at a time when Nigerians are facing unprecedented economic pressures, soaring inflation rates, and a high cost of living. He warned that this decision will exacerbate poverty levels, increase depression, stress-related hospital admissions, social unrest, and mortality rates.

The NMA chairman highlighted the struggles of healthcare professionals, who earn an average of $300 per month, and the impossibility of coping with the astronomical increases in the cost of living. He urged President Tinubu to intervene urgently, reverse the petrol price hike, and prioritize the welfare of Nigerians.

Furthermore, Kehinde advised the Federal Government to rethink its economic policies, move towards self-sufficiency in petroleum production, and revitalize local refineries. He also emphasized the need to address persistent insecurity to create a stable environment conducive to economic growth and reduce hardship and poverty among Nigerians.
