Super Eagles Striker Awoniyi Returns with a Bang

Date:

Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest FC striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, has expressed his eagerness to start the 2025 African Cup of Nations in Morocco on a strong note. In a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, Awoniyi emphasized that the team has the potential to excel in the tournament. He stated, “For us, it is something big when it comes to playing for the Super Eagles. I think we have what it takes to win every game in Africa. It is just about putting everything together and playing for the country with pride.”

Awoniyi returns to the Super Eagles after a months-long absence due to an injury sustained during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Lesotho in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. The striker expressed happiness over his return and acknowledged that every player called up to the team deserves a place in the starting lineup. He said, “I can say it is an opportunity to play for the Super Eagles and a great privilege for that matter for every one of us. Everyone called up is excited about it and I believe each and everyone is going to give their best for the country.”

Awoniyi also addressed his current situation at Nottingham Forest FC, where he has been struggling to secure a regular starting position due to his long absence from injury. He stated, “At least I am playing week in, week out, with that, I will get to see more playing time. You must understand that we have lots of quality players and everyone deserves a place in the team.”

The Super Eagles are set to face the Cheetahs of Benin Republic on Saturday in Uyo, followed by another AFCON qualifying match against Rwanda on September 10 in Kigali. Awoniyi’s return to the team and his determination to perform well will undoubtedly boost the team’s morale and chances of success in the upcoming matches.
