Mass Cheating: NECO Invites 40 Schools for Interrogation

Date:

The National Examination Council (NECO) has taken stern action against schools involved in mass cheating in the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, announced at a press conference in Minna that 40 secondary schools across 17 states would be invited for interrogation.

These schools were found guilty of whole-school cheating, and appropriate sanctions will be applied after discussion. Additionally, one school in Ekiti has been recommended for de-registration due to mass cheating in two core subjects and one science subject. Furthermore, 21 supervisors from 12 states have been recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision and negligence.

NECO’s efforts have led to a 30.1% reduction in malpractice, with 8,437 candidates involved compared to 12,030 in 2023. Wushishi emphasized the council’s commitment to maintaining exam integrity. Meanwhile, the 2024 SSCE results show promising outcomes, with over 60% of candidates passing with English Language and Mathematics.

The breakdown reveals:
– 1,376,423 registered candidates (706,950 males, 669,473 females)

– 1,367,736 candidates sat for the exam (702,112 males, 665,624 females)

– 828,824 candidates achieved five credits and above, including English and Mathematics (60.55%)

– 1,147,597 candidates achieved five credits and above, irrespective of English and Mathematics (83.90%)
