Peter Obi Applauds Super Eagles’ Resilience Amid Libya Ordeal, Criticizes Unfair Treatment

Date:

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, has expressed deep admiration for the Nigerian Super Eagles, commending their patriotism, patience, and resilience following their recent ordeal in Libya. Obi’s statement comes after the Nigerian national football team faced harsh conditions at a Libyan airport, leaving players and officials stranded for hours without food or internet access.

The Super Eagles, en route to face the Mediterranean Knights in a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier, ultimately decided to return to Nigeria in protest of the poor treatment, prompting the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to delist the match from the AFCON qualification schedule.

Taking to his X handle on Thursday morning, Obi sympathized with the players, encouraging them to remain focused and not let the unfortunate incident discourage them. The former Governor of Anambra State also called for collective efforts to restore dignity and respect to Nigeria on the international stage.

In his statement, Obi said:

“Like every other patriotic Nigerian, I sincerely sympathize with our dear Super Eagles over their ordeal in Libya on their way to play the Morocco 2025 AFCON Qualifier return leg match, which was later delisted by CAF following the players’ decision not to play the match.”

“The neglect and abandonment they and their officials suffered at a remote Libyan airport is highly regrettable and justifies their alternative decision of returning home.”

Obi also expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overcome the setback, urging them to channel their frustration into securing victory in future matches. He praised their steadfastness in the face of adversity, while also highlighting the symbolic role of sports in uniting and uplifting the nation during trying times.

“While we await the outcome of an investigation ordered by CAF, I wish to use this opportunity to commend the players for their patriotism, patience, and forbearance in the face of the unfair treatment by our Libyan brothers.”

“I appeal to them not to allow this sad experience dampen their zeal or break their spirit. On the other hand, it should recharge their determination to fight to win the match whenever it takes place, to qualify for the Morocco 2025 AFCON, and, to win the championship.”

Obi’s message reflects the broader sentiment among Nigerians, who were disappointed by the incident but remain hopeful for future victories. He emphasized the role of the Super Eagles in bringing joy to a nation grappling with economic and political challenges.

“In times like this, when Nigerians are left dejected by the sorry state of affairs in the country, every victory by the Super Eagles would not only serve to unite the country but also give Nigerians something to celebrate.”

Concluding his statement, Obi used the incident as a call to action for Nigerians to strive for a better future, noting that with effective leadership, Nigeria’s image on the global stage could be restored.

“The sad experience of our national team in Libya should encourage all of us to work hard to bring more respect and dignity to our nation. With the right leadership in place, Nigeria surely will rise again. Indeed, a new Nigeria is POssible.”
