DSS Grants Bail to NLC President Joe Ajaero Amid Labour Ultimatum

The Department of State Services (DSS) has granted administrative bail to Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero His release came just minutes before a midnight ultimatum set by organized labour.Pro-democracy activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, announced Ajaero’s release on X.com, describing it as a triumph over the “fascist regime” of President Bola Tinubu.

Earlier on Monday, Ajaero was arrested by the DSS at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while en route to the United Kingdom for an official assignment. His arrest sparked immediate backlash from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), all of whom criticized the Tinubu administration for what they termed an assault on democratic rights.

The NLC convened an emergency meeting following Ajaero’s detention, demanding his immediate release and warning of a potential nationwide strike. In a statement, NLC’s National Administrative Council condemned the arrest as illegal and an attack on workers’ rights. The union also called for the reversal of the recent petrol price hike and reaffirmed its commitment to opposing oppression.The NLC urged the government to reverse what it termed a “dangerous trend” and implement the new National Minimum Wage.
